Why Starting with Why Can Change Everything: Lessons from Simon Sinek

“This book is about a naturally occurring pattern, a way of thinking, acting and communicating that gives some leaders the ability to inspire those around them.” — Simon Sinek

Why I Started with Start With Why

Do you think starting with why is truly important in our lives?

In my opinion, absolutely. Understanding our purpose—the reason behind what we do—can change everything: the way we lead, build, and connect.

I decided to read Simon Sinek’s Start With Why because I recently began to recognize the power of asking why. This idea resonated deeply with me—not just as a developer or entrepreneur, but as someone who wants to lead with impact.

Inspiration Is Not Reserved for a Few

A powerful point Simon makes early in the book is that leadership is not an exclusive trait. We often believe that leaders are “born” and that inspiration is something only a few possess. But that’s not true.

“The ability is not reserved for them exclusively,” Simon writes.

And I believe that’s completely true.

Leadership is a skill—an ability we can all develop. Some may have a head start, but every one of us can learn how to inspire.

Why Inspiring Others Matters

Let’s talk about why inspiration is more powerful than instruction.

Simon uses the story of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as a key example. They had a vision—a compelling why—but what truly made Apple exceptional was their ability to communicate that vision clearly and consistently. They inspired others to believe in something bigger.

“What made Apple special is that they've been able to repeat the pattern over and over.”

Great leaders don’t just manage tasks. They spark belief.

They make people act not out of obligation, but out of desire. That’s the power of starting with why.

From Employees to Believers

Here’s the difference Simon highlights:

  • Managers get people to work.
  • Leaders inspire people to act.

Inspired teams are stronger, more resilient, and far more creative.

They aren’t just following instructions—they’re moving toward a vision they believe in.

“Inspired employees make for stronger companies and stronger economies.”

Final Thoughts: Why This Matters to Me

As I go deeper into this book, I realize how crucial it is to start with why in every meaningful project—whether it’s building a product, leading a team, or writing an article like this.

This series will continue as I explore more lessons from Start With Why.

In the next post, I’ll dive into The Golden Circle—the framework that changed how I think about communication, branding, and leadership.

🔍 Questions to Reflect On

  • Are you clear on your why—in life, work, or your current project?
  • Do you inspire others, or do you just inform them?
  • What would change if you led with purpose first, instead of features or goals?

Thanks for reading. Follow me as I continue this reflection series on Simon Sinek’s book. If this resonated with you, feel free to share or connect with me on LinkedIn.
